Novice Gone Native the Keys in Florida
Back Print Page Email Page

From the very first time, it wasn't hard to LOVE IT!!!! the Keys in Florida!

It started by car in 1971 and going strong today! From a college summer of adventurous whimsy through raising a family and showing my two boys, now in college, a subtropical world you just don’t see anywhere else here in the contiguous 48 states. 1700 islands, two bridges in and out, one road down and back, 106.5 miles (170.4 km), 110 mile markers of pure island mentality! With the queen conch as it’s signature and the Conch Republic its’ call letters, a vacation in the Florida Keys will never leave your soul. Moreover, you will never sit at home, never go to work, or sit in your car, or watch tv, or dine at a restaurant, or be on a boat, or walk your favorite park, or wake up in the morning, or work in your yard, or look your child or partner in the eye, or…….anything else one would add to this list without saying “that was sic”! Now, “sic” is a current word floating around with my college kids, which is latin for “it is so”. Well, I’m here to tell you “it is so”! “That’s sic”!

You’ve heard of the words epidemic, pandemic, infectious, etc. This island mentality is every bit and more, to your being! Going 55mph, 75mph, or more to hurry up and get somewhere is no longer the issue. Island Time is now your seat belt.

A Florida Keys vacation will take you mile marker by mile marker, deeper and deeper into a subtropical world which is not like any you’ve seen or experienced. Eco friendly, family friendly, fishing that goes way beyond your wildest dreams, resorts/hotels/spa’s/motels/camping/RV parks all with amenities that will excite most anything you're looking for. The continuum of services available will exceed any expectations one is looking for.

You can start this keys vacation in many different ways. A flight into Miami/Ft. Lauderdale/West Palm Beach and rent a vehicle. I’ve even done it by motorcycle with some friends. You can even fly into Key West if you like. But, there is nothing like doing the “Keys Crawl” all the way down to Key West and the Straits of Florida. Drive it! Taste it! Feel it! See it! Smell it! You become numb with pleasure as you crawl  down across 49 bridges into a subtropical environment,  the only one here in the USA.

So, let’s get started on your florida keys vacation, we’re still on mainland time, let’s get going across that first bridge!

Now which one to take, do I want to go to the top of the Keys, in that case take a left on Card Sound Road and use the Jewfish drawbridge at milemarker (mm) 106. This will get you to the extreme top of the Keys. Or do you want to take a more direct rout to start going down the Keys, continue on US 1 and take the Key Largo Cut at mm 103.5. Either way, I dare you! That first moment across either bridge will feel like you’ve cut the umbilical cord to the mainland. It’s kind of like going up in an airplane for the first time. You know you’ve left the ground. No going back now. You’ve now crossed over into a Florida Keys vacation. Now, let your wanderlust take you as deep into the experience as you want to. Jimmy Buffets “Changes in Lattitudes, Changes in Attitudes” never had more meaning!

I didn’t know much about the Florida Keys, but I JUST KNEW I HAD TO GO THERE! The first time I drove all the way to the end, Key West. Completely oblivious to all the stuff I was passing by and missing. Totally mesmerized by the scenes of ocean to one side and Gulf to the other, flats, mangrove, houses on concrete stilts, seemingly marinas every where, the changing colors of the water as clouds past over and the time of day changed, birds I’d never seen other than travel clips, nests perched high atop utility poles, remnants of the Flagler train route, people fishing off bridges and shoreline, boats going out to points unknown, lighthouses of all kinds and shapes, skidoos weaving around in small bays, palm trees and tropical foliage of all sorts, beaches with boats and kayaks pulled up on them,  RV’s of all types makes and models,  freighters on the distant horizon, seeing colors and moods of the water change on both the Gulf side and the Atlantic side, short glimpses of  resort looking areas. On and on it went for about 3 ½ hours. Finally Key West and the Florida Straits. Well that first time put me, how do some phrase it, “off the rails”, “gone native”, “off the charts”! So this is what a vacation in the Florida Keys is all about. Little did I know, I had only scratched the surface.

My experience, over these 38 years, is that one has to remember that it is plus or minus 100 miles to travel your Florida Keys vacation and these miles are NOT like getting on an expressway going 70mph and covering it all in an hour and a half. Keep 3 ½ to 4 plus hours, in mind, to drive straight thru. I’ve found that sort of hop-scotching down the Florida Keys and then back up will get the most of the experience. It would be excellent if you write down on a “crib” sheet, what TOTAL highlights you would desire to do on your vacation to the Florida Keys. You can easily adjust but, plan on doing half of them on the way down and the other half on the way back. This will give you a feel of excitement and involvement as well as a sense of relaxation and not running around with your hair on fire!  For example, if you’re into camping, do your camping on the way down. Depending on the time you have, and I’m not going to say one length of time is better than another (I’ve done it all sorts of ways),  the key is to identify types of things you want to do. Some will involve more action type of activities and others will involve more laid back or sedentary types of things. Using my camping idea, spend a couple of days in an area you would like to do "camping out" types of things. Maybe some shore fishing, a kayak tour, eco tour, maybe just some shut down time at the local beach or shopping. Do some scuba diving or snorkeling. I will provide NUMEROUS linkages to point directions I’ve already gone and plan on doing in the near and distant future, as we proceed along here. My point is that these activities require time to set up tents, or RV, cooking time, cleanup, etc.

I think you will agree your energy level is at a peak in the beginning and tends to wane as your  vacation time goes on. As you get closer to Key West, that is the time to start looking for all those creature comfort amenities. This is not to say that you should not take advantage of all the fine accommodations, restaurants, etc. on the way down if you wish. Either way is great.  But you can catch these same places on the way back up. Either way, don’t try to do everything on the way down. I guarantee you’ll be worn out when you get to Key West. Getting use to the “island mentality” is an art. You need to adapt, slow down, relax, do it when you want to do it. You’re not due at work or anywhere you’re use to going. YOU make the schedule. You may even try to schedule 3 or 4 or 5 things in one day. Don’t do it! Cut that in half if not more.

If you are planning on shore fishing plan on at least 4-5 hours, getting bait, maybe equipment, driving to and from, take time to try different areas depending on the tide times and maybe even the weather. Enjoy it, experience it. The same goes for eco tours, snorkeling, diving etc. Do 1 or 2 activities a day. You’ll enjoy it more and remember it distinctly, rather than a blur!

On your way back up, usually you are driving to pick up a flight back home. You must plan on that 4 hours just to get off the keys plus another couple of hours to Miami or 3 hrs up to Ft. Lauderdale or 4 hours to West Palm, by the time you return a vehicle and get to check in. These are not small amounts of time. You end up leaving Key West EARLY and drive all day and you’ve RUINED all the leisurely time you’ve spent over the last week or more. Don’t do it. Take your time and do some things on the way back up. There is a multitude of things to do in a casual and not so energy expenditure mode. Don’t forget, or underestimate the effect the sun will have on you. For ALL the benefits of clear sunny days that it allows you to do all these beautiful adventures and activities, it WILL slow you down. Hence the term “island mentality”!

Hope to see you there SOON!
